The Past Perfect — English Bac PC

English is a nationally examined subject in the Bac Sciences Physiques (PC) stream, with a coefficient of 2 — the lowest weighting in the stream, level with Philosophy and well behind Mathematics and Physics-Chemistry (coefficient 7). The paper still tests reading comprehension, language and guided writing, and because differences between candidates are narrow, a few extra marks in English move the overall average as much as a mark in a science subject.

The national English paper has three parts: Reading Comprehension (a text plus questions), Language (grammar and vocabulary in context), and Writing (a guided paragraph or short essay of about 180 words). Form

had + past participle (regular -ed or irregular: gone, seen, written…). Negative: had not / hadn't. Question: Had + subject + past participle?

Use: an earlier action in the past

Two past actions: the one that happened FIRST goes into the past perfect, the second into the past simple. E.g. “When I arrived, the film had already started.” (the film started before I arrived).

Time markers

before, after, by the time, already, just, never (set against the past reference point). already and just go between had and the past participle: had already left, had just finished.

Using the past perfect for a single isolated past action with no second reference action — two past actions are needed to justify it.

Forgetting to place already / just between had and the past participle (had already left, never already had left).

Confusing past perfect and present perfect: had (past perfect) takes a point in the past as reference, have / has (present perfect) takes the present.

Chronological order. The thief escaped BEFORE the police arrived: the earlier action (escape) goes into the past perfect, the later one (arrive) into the past simple.

Result. “When the police arrived, the thief had already escaped.”

Do I always have to use the past perfect with before or after?

No, it is often optional: before and after already show the order, so “I left after I finished” (two past simples) is acceptable in speech. The past perfect is still expected in Bac writing, especially without before / after.

What is the difference between past perfect and past simple?

The past simple reports a dated past fact. The past perfect places an action BEFORE another past action or reference point — it exists only by comparison with another moment in the past.

Why learn the irregular verbs for this chapter?

The past participle (third column: gone, seen, written, taken…) is needed for the past perfect as well as the present perfect and the passive: one wrong past participle costs marks across several chapters at once.

How should a PC candidate revise English at coefficient 2?

Efficiently, not heavily. Keep one clear rule and two example sentences per grammar point, one word list per theme, and a reusable essay skeleton (introduction, two body paragraphs, balanced conclusion). Thirty focused minutes a week is enough to lift the English mark, and that mark counts in the average exactly like a mark in a science subject.

Is this grammar point actually tested on the Bac PC English paper?

Yes — in the Language section as gap-fill, sentence-joining or error-correction, and indirectly in Writing, where the same structures decide whether a sentence is marked as accurate. One rule, two examples and one typical mistake per point is enough to cover both.
