English carries a coefficient of 2 in the Bac Sciences et Technologies Mécaniques (STM) stream. The core subjects are Mathematics and Engineering Sciences (coefficient 7 each), then Physics-Chemistry (coefficient 5). English and Philosophy (coefficient 2) form the margin where candidate rankings and honours are settled. Mastering the structure of a piece of writing matters more here than memorising it.

Irony and sarcasm

Irony = saying the opposite of what you mean, often for effect (“What lovely weather!” in a storm). Sarcasm = irony aimed at mocking or hurting someone (“Nice job.” after a mistake). All sarcasm is ironic; not all irony is sarcastic.

Puns: wordplay

A pun exploits two meanings of one word, or two words that sound alike, for a humorous effect: “Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana.” Puns are common in headlines and advertising.

Self-deprecating humour and cultural difference

Self-deprecating humour = joking about your own flaws or failures, valued in British culture as a sign of modesty. What counts as funny — irony, understatement, taboo topics — varies from one culture to another.

Explaining a pun by ignoring the double meaning: you must point out both senses of the word for the joke to be clear.

Name the type. Making fun of oneself is self-deprecating humour.

Explain the effect. It defuses the embarrassment of losing and makes the speaker seem modest and good-humoured rather than upset.

Usually in reading comprehension: a text with an ironic or humorous tone, followed by questions asking you to identify the type of humour or explain why a passage is funny.

What is the difference between a joke and a pun?

A joke is any short humorous story or remark; a pun is a specific kind of joke built on wordplay — the double meaning of a word or on similar-sounding words.

Is British humour really different from American humour?

Broadly, British humour leans more on irony, understatement and self-deprecation, American humour more on directness and exaggeration — but both traditions use all of these, and individuals vary.

English is far from my mechanical specialism — how do I approach it?

Treat it as a system with inputs and outputs: the input is a prompt, the processing is analysis then discussion, the output is a conclusion that settles the question. Learn that flow, apply it to the 31 chapters with two examples each, and one weekly session is enough to raise the mark.
