English carries a coefficient of 2 in the Bac Sciences Maths B (SMB) stream, level with Philosophy. Mathematics dominates the stream (coefficient 9), followed by Physics-Chemistry and Engineering Sciences (coefficient 7 each), so English can look marginal — but it and Philosophy form the narrow margin where rankings and honours are actually decided. Reading, language and guided writing are all assessed.

Nationality is the legal bond between a person and a state (shown by a passport). Citizenship is the fuller idea of belonging to a political community, with rights AND duties, and a role to play in public life.

The rights of a citizen

Duties and civic engagement

obeying the law, paying taxes, respecting others' rights, and — beyond obligations — active citizenship: volunteering, joining associations, voting, and holding public authorities to account.
