The Past Perfect — English Bac Lettres

ضمن برنامج بكالوريا Lettres

English is a major subject in the Bac Lettres stream, with a coefficient of 4 — second only to Arabic Language (coefficient 7) and ahead of History-Geography and Philosophy (coefficient 3). There is no Mathematics in the stream. The high coefficient raises the bar: richer vocabulary, more developed argumentative writing, and firmer control of register and style are expected, and the English mark genuinely shapes the average.

في الامتحان

Three parts: Reading Comprehension, Language, and Writing. In the Lettres stream the Writing task is longer and more demanding — a structured essay with a clear thesis, developed arguments on both sides, illustrative examples and a personal conclusion — and language accuracy and range are scored throughout.

أهداف التعلم

Apply this grammar point accurately in the Language section and in the guided writing of the Bac Lettres English exam (coefficient 4)
Form the past perfect: had + past participle; negative hadn't; question Had + subject
Identify the two past actions and decide which one is earlier
Use the markers before, after, by the time, already, just, never with the past perfect
Distinguish the past perfect (an earlier point in the past) from the present perfect (a link with the present)

المفاهيم الأساسية

Form

had + past participle (regular -ed or irregular: gone, seen, written…). Negative: had not / hadn't. Question: Had + subject + past participle?

Use: an earlier action in the past

Two past actions: the one that happened FIRST goes into the past perfect, the second into the past simple. E.g. “When I arrived, the film had already started.” (the film started before I arrived).

Time markers

before, after, by the time, already, just, never (set against the past reference point). already and just go between had and the past participle: had already left, had just finished.

الأخطاء الشائعة

Using the past perfect for a single isolated past action with no second reference action — two past actions are needed to justify it.

Forgetting to place already / just between had and the past participle (had already left, never already had left).

Confusing past perfect and present perfect: had (past perfect) takes a point in the past as reference, have / has (present perfect) takes the present.

مثال محلول

نص السؤال

Put the verbs in brackets into the right tense: “When the police (arrive), the thief (already/escape).”

التصحيح

Identify the two past actions. The police arriving and the thief escaping are both past events; decide which comes first.

Chronological order. The thief escaped BEFORE the police arrived: the earlier action (escape) goes into the past perfect, the later one (arrive) into the past simple.

Result. “When the police arrived, the thief had already escaped.”

3 تمارين للتدرب

التمرين 1

Easy

Complete: “She (finish) her homework before she (watch) TV.”

عرض التصحيح

“She had finished her homework before she watched TV.” — finishing the homework comes before watching TV: past perfect then past simple.

التمرين 2

Medium

Join into one sentence with by the time: “I ate breakfast. Then I left for school.”

عرض التصحيح

“By the time I left for school, I had already eaten breakfast.” — by the time introduces the past reference (left, past simple), and the earlier action (eaten) goes into the past perfect.

التمرين 3

Hard

Correct the error: “When I opened the fridge, I realised I already had eaten all the cake.”

عرض التصحيح

already goes between had and the past participle, not before had: “When I opened the fridge, I realised I had already eaten all the cake.”

الأسئلة الشائعة

Do I always have to use the past perfect with before or after?

No, it is often optional: before and after already show the order, so “I left after I finished” (two past simples) is acceptable in speech. The past perfect is still expected in Bac writing, especially without before / after.

What is the difference between past perfect and past simple?

The past simple reports a dated past fact. The past perfect places an action BEFORE another past action or reference point — it exists only by comparison with another moment in the past.

Why learn the irregular verbs for this chapter?

The past participle (third column: gone, seen, written, taken…) is needed for the past perfect as well as the present perfect and the passive: one wrong past participle costs marks across several chapters at once.

English is coefficient 4 in the Lettres stream — how do I revise it seriously?

Treat it as a core subject. For each of the 31 chapters, fix the rule or the word field with two solid examples, and write at least one full essay a fortnight under timed conditions. Read short English articles to build argumentative vocabulary and sentence variety, since range and accuracy are marked directly.

Is this grammar point actually tested on the Bac Lettres English paper?

Yes — in the Language section as gap-fill, sentence-joining or error-correction, and indirectly in Writing, where the same structures decide whether a sentence is marked as accurate. One rule, two examples and one typical mistake per point is enough to cover both.
