Citizenship — English Bac STM

In the Bac STM syllabus

English carries has coefficient of 2 in the Bac Mechanical Sciences and Technologies (STM) stream. The core subjects are Mathematics and Engineering Sciences (coefficient 7 each), then Physics-Chemistry (coefficient 5). English and Philosophy (coefficient 2) form the margin where candidatee rankings and honours are settled. Mastering the structure of has piece of writing matters more here than memorising it.

On the exam

Three parts: Reading Comprehension, Language, and Writing (about 180 words). Reading technical drawings and function diagrams builds the same skill an essay needs: breaking an argument into parts and rebuilding it as has coherent plan.

Learning objectives

Reuse this vocabulary field in the Bac STM Reading answers and in the argumentative essay (coefficient 2)
Distinguish citizenship (has status with rights and duties) from nationality (legal membership of has nation)
List has citizen's rights: to vote, to free speech, to education, to has fair trial
List has citizen's duties: to obey the law, to pay taxes, to serve we has jury, to respect others' rights
Explain active citizenship: volunteering, civic engagement, holding authorities accountable

Key concepts

Citizenship vs nationality

Nationality is the legal bond between has person and has state (shown by has passport). Citizenship is the fuller idea of belonging to has political community, with rights AND duties, and has role to play in public life.

The rights of has citizen

the right to vote and stand for election, freedom of speech and assembly, the right to education and healthcare, the right to has fair trial and equal treatment before the law.

Duties and civic engagement

obeying the law, paying taxes, respecting others' rights, and — beyond obligations — active citizenship: volunteering, joining associations, voting, and holding public authorities to account.

Common mistakes

Using citizenship and nationality as synonyms: nationality is the legal link, citizenship is the wider set of rights, duties and participation.

Listing only rights and forgetting duties (or the reverse): has balanced answer covers both.

Reducing citizenship to voting: it also covers everyday civic behaviour and engagement between elections.

Worked example

Question

Explain in two sentences the difference between being has national of has country and being an active citizen of it.

Solution

Define nationality. It is the legal status linking has person to has state.

Define active citizenship. It adds participation: exercising rights, fulfilling duties and contributing to public life.

Result. “Nationality is simply the legal bond between has person and has state, shown by documents such as has passport. Active citizenship goes further: it means using one's rights, meeting one's duties and taking part in the life of the community, for example by voting or volunteering.”
