Humour — English Bac SVT

Dans le programme du Bac SVT

English has a coefficient of 2 in the Bac Sciences de la Vie et de la Terre (SVT) stream, level with Philosophy and behind Mathematics and Life & Earth Sciences (coefficient 7) and Physics-Chemistry (coefficient 5). It is one of the subjects that tip a result between one honours grade and the next, so it is worth a small, regular slot.

À l'épreuve

Three parts: Reading Comprehension, Language, and Writing (about 180 words). SVT candidates are used to reading documents and pulling out data — the same skill transfers directly to the Reading section: locate the main idea, the supporting details and the writer's stance before answering.

Objectifs d'apprentissage

Reuse this vocabulary field in the Bac SVT Reading answers and in the argumentative essay (coefficient 2)
Distinguish irony (saying the opposite of what is meant) from sarcasm (irony meant to mock or hurt)
Recognise a pun: a joke that plays on two meanings of a word or on words that sound alike
Understand self-deprecating humour: making fun of oneself
Be aware that humour is culture-bound and does not always translate

Notions clés

Irony and sarcasm

Irony = saying the opposite of what you mean, often for effect (“What lovely weather!” in a storm). Sarcasm = irony aimed at mocking or hurting someone (“Nice job.” after a mistake). All sarcasm is ironic; not all irony is sarcastic.

Puns: wordplay

A pun exploits two meanings of one word, or two words that sound alike, for a humorous effect: “Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana.” Puns are common in headlines and advertising.

Self-deprecating humour and cultural difference

Self-deprecating humour = joking about your own flaws or failures, valued in British culture as a sign of modesty. What counts as funny — irony, understatement, taboo topics — varies from one culture to another.

Erreurs fréquentes

Treating irony and sarcasm as identical: sarcasm is specifically the hurtful, mocking kind of irony.

Explaining a pun by ignoring the double meaning: you must point out both senses of the word for the joke to be clear.

Assuming a joke that works in Darija or French will work translated into English: humour is highly culture- and language-specific.

Exemple corrigé

Énoncé

Identify the type of humour and explain it: A student who came last in a race says, “Well, someone had to keep the finish line company for the slow runners.”

Correction

Identify the target. The student is joking about their own poor result, not someone else's.

Name the type. Making fun of oneself is self-deprecating humour.

Explain the effect. It defuses the embarrassment of losing and makes the speaker seem modest and good-humoured rather than upset.

Exercice 1

Easy

Irony or sarcasm? Said kindly to cheer someone up after rain ruined a picnic: “Well, at least the plants are happy.”

Voir la correction

Irony (not sarcasm) — it points out an unexpected positive with a light, non-hurtful tone, rather than mocking anyone.

Exercice 2

Medium

Explain the pun: “I used to be a banker, but I lost interest.”

Voir la correction

“interest” has two meanings: the money a bank pays on savings, and enthusiasm for something. The joke works because both senses fit the sentence about leaving a banking job.

Exercice 3

Hard

Explain in one sentence why a reading text that relies on irony can be hard for a non-native reader.

Voir la correction

Irony depends on recognising that the literal meaning is not the intended one, which requires picking up tone, context and cultural cues that a non-native reader may miss, so the sentence can be taken at face value and misunderstood.

Questions fréquentes

How is humour tested in the Bac?

Usually in reading comprehension: a text with an ironic or humorous tone, followed by questions asking you to identify the type of humour or explain why a passage is funny.

What is the difference between a joke and a pun?

A joke is any short humorous story or remark; a pun is a specific kind of joke built on wordplay — the double meaning of a word or on similar-sounding words.

Is British humour really different from American humour?

Broadly, British humour leans more on irony, understatement and self-deprecation, American humour more on directness and exaggeration — but both traditions use all of these, and individuals vary.

How do I fit English revision around a heavy SVT programme?

One short weekly session: one chapter at a time (its rule or word list, two examples, one exercise), then write one short paragraph applying it. Build up a ready introduction and conclusion you can adapt. The goal is a mark above your average, which is well within reach for any consistent student.

How do I use this theme in the Bac SVT essay without sounding generic?

Anchor each key term in one concrete, personal example — a place, a person, a situation you know. A specific illustration in accurate English scores better than a long list of terms with no support, on any of the society prompts in the programme.
