Future Perfect — English Bac SVT

Dans le programme du Bac SVT

English has a coefficient of 2 in the Bac Sciences de la Vie et de la Terre (SVT) stream, level with Philosophy and behind Mathematics and Life & Earth Sciences (coefficient 7) and Physics-Chemistry (coefficient 5). It is one of the subjects that tip a result between one honours grade and the next, so it is worth a small, regular slot.

À l'épreuve

Three parts: Reading Comprehension, Language, and Writing (about 180 words). SVT candidates are used to reading documents and pulling out data — the same skill transfers directly to the Reading section: locate the main idea, the supporting details and the writer's stance before answering.

Objectifs d'apprentissage

Apply this grammar point accurately in the Language section and in the guided writing of the Bac SVT English exam (coefficient 2)
Form the future perfect: will have + past participle; negative won't have
Identify a precise future reference point (by + date / time, by the time + present)
Distinguish the future perfect (an action completed before a future point) from the simple future (a future action with no earlier reference)
Use the present simple, never will, in the clause introduced by by the time

Notions clés

Form

will have + past participle. Negative: won't have + past participle. Question: Will + subject + have + past participle?

Use: an action completed before a future point

The future perfect announces that an action will be finished before a specific future moment, introduced by by + date / time (“by 2030”) or by the time + a present-tense clause (“by the time you arrive”).

The by the time clause trap

In the clause introduced by by the time, use the present simple, never will, even though the meaning is future — as in all English time clauses (if, when, before, after, as soon as).

Erreurs fréquentes

Forgetting have after will: “will finished” is wrong — use “will have finished”.

Using will in the by the time clause: use the present simple (“by the time the guests arrive”, not “will arrive”).

Confusing the future perfect (an action completed before a future point) with the simple future (an action that will happen, with no sense of earlier completion).

Exemple corrigé

Énoncé

Put the verb in brackets into the right tense: “By 8 pm, we (finish) dinner.”

Correction

Spot the future reference. “By 8 pm” is a precise future moment before which an action must be complete.

Choose the tense. This is the typical future perfect structure: will have + past participle.

Result. “By 8 pm, we will have finished dinner.”

3 exercices pour t'entraîner

Exercice 1

Easy

Complete: “By next year, she (graduate) from university.”

Voir la correction

“will have graduated” — an action completed before a future point (next year).

Exercice 2

Medium

Rewrite with by the time: “The train leaves at 6 pm. I will arrive at 6:15 pm.”

Voir la correction

“By the time I arrive, the train will have left.” — the train leaving comes before my future arrival; the by the time clause is in the present simple (arrive), the main clause in the future perfect (will have left).

Exercice 3

Hard

Correct: “By the time you will read this letter, I will have leave the country.”

Voir la correction

Two errors: the by the time clause must be present simple (read, not will read), and the main verb must be a past participle (will have LEFT, not leave). Corrected: “By the time you read this letter, I will have left the country.”

Questions fréquentes

Is the future perfect common in the national exam?

Less common than the past perfect or the passive, but it appears regularly in the Language section's tense exercises, usually paired with by or by the time to test recognition of the future reference point.

Can I use will in a time clause?

No, never: after if, when, before, after, as soon as and by the time, use the present simple even for future meaning. Will stays in the main clause.

What is the difference between future perfect simple and continuous?

The future perfect simple (will have + past participle) stresses the completed result; the future perfect continuous (will have been + verb-ing) would stress the duration up to the future point. Only the simple is on the Bac programme.

How do I fit English revision around a heavy SVT programme?

One short weekly session: one chapter at a time (its rule or word list, two examples, one exercise), then write one short paragraph applying it. Build up a ready introduction and conclusion you can adapt. The goal is a mark above your average, which is well within reach for any consistent student.

Is this grammar point actually tested on the Bac SVT English paper?

Yes — in the Language section as gap-fill, sentence-joining or error-correction, and indirectly in Writing, where the same structures decide whether a sentence is marked as accurate. One rule, two examples and one typical mistake per point is enough to cover both.
