Future Perfect — English Bac STM

English carries a coefficient of 2 in the Bac Sciences et Technologies Mécaniques (STM) stream. The core subjects are Mathematics and Engineering Sciences (coefficient 7 each), then Physics-Chemistry (coefficient 5). The future perfect announces that an action will be finished before a specific future moment, introduced by by + date / time (“by 2030”) or by the time + a present-tense clause (“by the time you arrive”).

The by the time clause trap

In the clause introduced by by the time, use the present simple, never will, even though the meaning is future — as in all English time clauses (if, when, before, after, as soon as).

Erreurs fréquentes

Forgetting have after will: “will finished” is wrong — use “will have finished”.

Using will in the by the time clause: use the present simple (“by the time the guests arrive”, not “will arrive”).

Confusing the future perfect (an action completed before a future point) with the simple future (an action that will happen, with no sense of earlier completion).

Put the verb in brackets into the right tense: “By 8 pm, we (finish) dinner.”

Correction

Spot the future reference. “By 8 pm” is a precise future moment before which an action must be complete.

Choose the tense. This is the typical future perfect structure: will have + past participle.

Result. “By 8 pm, we will have finished dinner.”

Is the future perfect common in the national exam?

Less common than the past perfect or the passive, but it appears regularly in the Language section's tense exercises, usually paired with by or by the time to test recognition of the future reference point.

Can I use will in a time clause?

No, never: after if, when, before, after, as soon as and by the time, use the present simple even for future meaning. Will stays in the main clause.

What is the difference between future perfect simple and continuous?

The future perfect simple (will have + past participle) stresses the completed result; the future perfect continuous (will have been + verb-ing) would stress the duration up to the future point. Only the simple is on the Bac programme.

English is far from my mechanical specialism — how do I approach it?

Treat it as a system with inputs and outputs: the input is a prompt, the processing is analysis then discussion, the output is a conclusion that settles the question. Learn that flow, apply it to the 31 chapters with two examples each, and one weekly session is enough to raise the mark.

Is this grammar point actually tested on the Bac STM English paper?

Yes — in the Language section as gap-fill, sentence-joining or error-correction, and indirectly in Writing, where the same structures decide whether a sentence is marked as accurate. One rule, two examples and one typical mistake per point is enough to cover both.
