English is a nationally examined subject in the Bac Sciences et Technologies Électriques (STE) stream, with a coefficient of 2. It sits behind Mathematics, Engineering Sciences and Physics-Chemistry (coefficient 7 each) and shares the lowest weighting with Philosophy — but the English mark stays easy to raise through method, and its effect on the total is real.

Three parts: Reading Comprehension, Language, and Writing (about 180 words). A technical candidate's habit of analysing a system and its functions transfers to analysing a text: identify the thesis, the supporting arguments, the examples and the opposing view before writing.

Notions clés

Identity and cultural heritage

heritage (what is handed down), customs, traditions, beliefs, values. E.g. “Respecting one's cultural heritage does not mean rejecting change.”

Tradition vs modernity

generation gap, conservative vs open-minded, globalisation sometimes threatening local traditions. Contrast connectors (however, whereas, although — see Linking Words) structure the comparison.

Tolerance and diversity

tolerance, diversity, open-mindedness (positive) contrast with prejudice and stereotype. E.g. “Cultural diversity should be seen as an asset, not a threat.”

Erreurs fréquentes

Confusing heritage (cultural inheritance handed down) with inheritance (material property left to someone).

Using prejudice as a neutral synonym of opinion: prejudice carries a negative connotation (a hasty, often unfair judgement).

Writing a one-sided essay on tradition vs modernity: the exam rewards a plan that presents both viewpoints before a personal conclusion.

Write an opening sentence for an essay on: “Should young people always follow their family traditions?”

Correction

Frame the topic with the chapter's vocabulary. Use traditions, values and generation gap to set up the debate.

Announce the two viewpoints to come. A good introduction signals that both sides will be examined, without settling the question at once.

Result. “In every society, young people face a difficult choice between respecting their family's traditions and values and adapting to a fast-changing modern world — a tension often called the generation gap.”
