Brain Drain — English Bac SMB

Dans le programme du Bac SMB

English carries a coefficient of 2 in the Bac Sciences Maths B (SMB) stream, level with Philosophy. Mathematics dominates the stream (coefficient 9), followed by Physics-Chemistry and Engineering Sciences (coefficient 7 each), so English can look marginal — but it and Philosophy form the narrow margin where rankings and honours are actually decided. Reading, language and guided writing are all assessed.

À l'épreuve

Three parts: Reading Comprehension, Language, and Writing (a guided text of about 180 words). SMB candidates, trained to be rigorous and systematic, do well on the Language section if they treat each grammar point as a rule with a fixed structure; the risk is a dry essay that ignores vocabulary range and register, which the Writing section also scores.

Objectifs d'apprentissage

Reuse this vocabulary field in the Bac SMB Reading answers and in the argumentative essay (coefficient 2)
Define brain drain: the large-scale emigration of highly skilled or educated people from their home country
List the causes: low salaries, limited career prospects, poor working conditions, political instability
List the consequences: loss of skills and investment in training, weaker public services, widening development gap
Discuss solutions: better pay and research funding, diaspora networks, brain gain and brain circulation

Notions clés

Defining brain drain

the emigration of highly qualified people (doctors, engineers, researchers, teachers) from a developing country to a richer one, where pay and opportunities are greater. The opposite is brain gain; when skilled people move back and forth, it is called brain circulation.

Causes of the phenomenon

low salaries, few career prospects, under-funded research, poor working conditions, political or economic instability, and the appeal of a better standard of living abroad.

Consequences and solutions

Consequences: the home country loses the money spent training people, key sectors (health, education) are short-staffed, and the development gap widens. Solutions: raise pay and research funding, build diaspora networks, and create conditions for skilled people to return.

Erreurs fréquentes

Treating brain drain as only a personal choice: it is driven by structural factors (pay, prospects, stability), which is what an essay should analyse.

Confusing brain drain (skilled people leaving) with immigration in general (any movement of people).

Writing about the problem with no solutions: the exam prompt usually asks for causes AND remedies.

Exemple corrigé

Énoncé

Write a topic sentence for a body paragraph on the consequences of brain drain for a developing country.

Correction

Focus the paragraph. One paragraph = one idea: here, the consequences for the country of origin.

Name a concrete consequence. The loss of the public money invested in training is a strong, specific point.

Result. “The most damaging consequence of brain drain is economic: a developing country pays to educate doctors and engineers, only to see that investment benefit the wealthier countries they emigrate to.”

Exercice 1

Easy

What is “brain drain”? (a medical condition / the emigration of skilled people / a memory-training method)

Voir la correction

the emigration of skilled people — the large-scale departure of highly qualified people from their home country.

Exercice 2

Medium

Give one cause and one consequence of brain drain in a single sentence.

Voir la correction

“Low salaries and limited research funding push skilled graduates to emigrate, which leaves the country's hospitals and universities short of qualified staff.” — cause (low pay, poor funding) and consequence (staff shortages) in one sentence.

Exercice 3

Hard

Explain in one sentence how a diaspora network can turn brain drain into “brain circulation”.

Voir la correction

When skilled emigrants stay connected to their home country — investing, mentoring, sharing knowledge or eventually returning — their expertise still benefits their country of origin, so the one-way loss of brain drain becomes a two-way exchange, or brain circulation.

Questions fréquentes

Why is brain drain a common Bac essay topic?

It combines a clear definition, obvious causes and consequences, and a personal angle (candidates and their friends face the choice), which makes it easy to develop with concrete arguments.

Is brain drain always bad for the country of origin?

Not entirely: emigrants send back remittances, may return with new skills, and can build networks that attract investment — a balanced essay mentions these as well as the losses.

What is the opposite of brain drain?

Brain gain — when a country attracts skilled people from abroad, or its own skilled emigrants come back.

A maths-stream student often dislikes English — how do they raise the mark?

Treat it as structure. Every writing task = introduction + argument + counter-argument + conclusion; every grammar point = one rule + one correct example + one typical mistake. Memorise that framework, apply it to the 31 chapters with two example sentences each, and 12/20 is reachable without eating into the heavy maths programme.

How do I use this theme in the Bac SMB essay without sounding generic?

Anchor each key term in one concrete, personal example — a place, a person, a situation you know. A specific illustration in accurate English scores better than a long list of terms with no support, on any of the society prompts in the programme.
