Citizenship — English Bac SGC

Dans le programme du Bac SGC

English carries a coefficient of 2 in the Bac Sciences de Gestion Comptable (SGC) stream — far behind Accounting (coefficient 8) and Business Organisation (coefficient 6), and level with Philosophy and Law. It is part of the margin that decides rankings and honours, and its mark is raised by method rather than by volume.

À l'épreuve

Three parts: Reading Comprehension, Language, and Writing (about 180 words). An accountant's discipline in ordering and justifying entries transfers to a well-ordered essay plan and a clearly sequenced argument.

Objectifs d'apprentissage

Reuse this vocabulary field in the Bac SGC Reading answers and in the argumentative essay (coefficient 2)
Distinguish citizenship (a status with rights and duties) from nationality (legal membership of a nation)
List a citizen's rights: to vote, to free speech, to education, to a fair trial
List a citizen's duties: to obey the law, to pay taxes, to serve on a jury, to respect others' rights
Explain active citizenship: volunteering, civic engagement, holding authorities accountable

Notions clés

Citizenship vs nationality

Nationality is the legal bond between a person and a state (shown by a passport). Citizenship is the fuller idea of belonging to a political community, with rights AND duties, and a role to play in public life.

The rights of a citizen

the right to vote and stand for election, freedom of speech and assembly, the right to education and healthcare, the right to a fair trial and equal treatment before the law.

Duties and civic engagement

obeying the law, paying taxes, respecting others' rights, and — beyond obligations — active citizenship: volunteering, joining associations, voting, and holding public authorities to account.

Erreurs fréquentes

Using citizenship and nationality as synonyms: nationality is the legal link, citizenship is the wider set of rights, duties and participation.

Listing only rights and forgetting duties (or the reverse): a balanced answer covers both.

Reducing citizenship to voting: it also covers everyday civic behaviour and engagement between elections.

Exemple corrigé

Énoncé

Explain in two sentences the difference between being a national of a country and being an active citizen of it.

Correction

Define nationality. It is the legal status linking a person to a state.

Define active citizenship. It adds participation: exercising rights, fulfilling duties and contributing to public life.

Result. “Nationality is simply the legal bond between a person and a state, shown by documents such as a passport. Active citizenship goes further: it means using one's rights, meeting one's duties and taking part in the life of the community, for example by voting or volunteering.”

Exercice 1

Easy

Classify as a right or a duty: “paying taxes”.

Voir la correction

A duty — an obligation the citizen owes to the community, not a benefit granted to them.

Exercice 2

Medium

Give one example of active citizenship that is not voting.

Voir la correction

Volunteering for a local association, taking part in a neighbourhood clean-up, or signing and sharing a petition about a public issue — all forms of civic engagement between elections.

Exercice 3

Hard

Explain in one sentence why rights and duties are usually presented as two sides of the same idea in citizenship.

Voir la correction

A citizen's rights (to vote, to free speech, to protection by the law) can only exist if other citizens and the state fulfil the matching duties (to respect those rights, to pay taxes that fund public services, to obey the law), so rights and duties depend on each other.

Questions fréquentes

Why is citizenship often paired with the theme of human rights?

Because a citizen's rights are the practical, national form of universal human rights, and citizenship is largely about how those rights are guaranteed and exercised within a state.

What is “digital citizenship”?

Behaving responsibly and respectfully online: protecting personal data, checking sources before sharing, not spreading hate speech — the same civic values applied to the internet.

How do I make this theme concrete in an essay?

Use specific examples: a local youth association, a national election, a campaign against littering — concrete cases show what rights, duties and engagement look like in practice.

English is coefficient 2 against 8 for accounting — how do I balance them?

Do not drop it: a mark in English weighs in the average like a mark in any coefficient-2 subject, and raising it is a matter of method, not accumulation. One weekly session — chapter, rule or words, example, two short paragraphs — plus a fixed template for the introduction and conclusion is enough to secure the marks.

How do I use this theme in the Bac SGC essay without sounding generic?

Anchor each key term in one concrete, personal example — a place, a person, a situation you know. A specific illustration in accurate English scores better than a long list of terms with no support, on any of the society prompts in the programme.
