Sustainable development is one of the most-discussed topics of our time — understanding its definition, its three pillars, and the vocabulary around it is essential for both Bac reading texts and written expression.

Defining sustainable development

The standard, widely used definition comes from the 1987 Brundtland Report: sustainable development is "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." In simpler terms, it means improving people's lives today — economically and socially — without using up or destroying the resources that future generations will need.

The three pillars

Sustainable development rests on three interconnected pillars. The economic pillar concerns fair and lasting growth — creating jobs, supporting responsible businesses, and reducing poverty. The social pillar concerns equity and quality of life — access to education, healthcare, and fair working conditions for everyone. The environmental pillar concerns protecting natural resources and ecosystems — reducing pollution, conserving biodiversity, and slowing climate change. "Real sustainability requires balancing the economic, social, and environmental pillars together — focusing on only one of them is not enough."

Key vocabulary

sustainability = the ability to be maintained at a certain level without depleting resources: "Companies are under pressure to improve the sustainability of their operations." renewable = able to be naturally replenished and therefore not depleted by use, such as solar or wind energy: "Morocco has invested heavily in renewable energy, especially solar power." conservation = the protection and careful management of natural resources: "Conservation programs help protect endangered species." ecosystem = a community of living organisms interacting with their physical environment: "Coral reefs are fragile ecosystems threatened by rising ocean temperatures." carbon footprint = the total amount of greenhouse gases produced directly or indirectly by a person, activity, or organization: "Taking the bus instead of driving reduces your carbon footprint." resources = materials or supplies (natural or economic) that can be used to meet needs: "Water is a precious resource that must be used responsibly."

Examples of sustainable practices

Common examples that appear frequently in Bac texts and essays include: switching to renewable energy sources like solar and wind power instead of fossil fuels; recycling paper, plastic, and glass instead of sending them to landfill; practicing conservation of water and forests through responsible management; and choosing responsible consumption — buying only what is needed, avoiding waste, and favoring durable, eco-friendly products over disposable ones.

Common mistakes

Confusing 'sustainable' with simply 'environmental' — sustainable development is not only about protecting nature; it also includes economic and social dimensions, such as fair wages and access to education.

Using 'renewable' and 'sustainable' as if they mean exactly the same thing — 'renewable' describes a resource that naturally replenishes itself (like solar or wind energy), while 'sustainable' more broadly describes practices that can continue long-term without depleting resources or harming future generations.

Writing 'ecosystem' when 'environment' is meant, or vice versa — an ecosystem is a specific community of living organisms interacting with their physical surroundings (a forest ecosystem, a coral reef ecosystem), while 'environment' is the broader, general natural world around us.

Forgetting the article or using the wrong preposition with 'carbon footprint' — the correct phrase is 'to reduce your carbon footprint' or 'to have a large/small carbon footprint,' not 'to reduce the carbon' alone.

Treating 'conservation' and 'preservation' as identical — conservation generally means the sustainable, managed use of natural resources, while preservation means protecting nature by leaving it untouched; in most Bac contexts, 'conservation' is the more commonly expected term.

Worked example — A school project on sustainability

Passage

"For our sustainable development project, our class studied the three pillars of sustainability. We visited a local farm that uses renewable energy — solar panels power the irrigation system, which lowers both costs and the farm's carbon footprint. We also learned about the conservation efforts protecting the nearby wetland ecosystem, home to several rare bird species. Finally, we interviewed shop owners about responsible consumption, and many said customers increasingly ask for products with less plastic packaging.
